INTENT
At St Francis we believe that Physical Education enables all children to succeed and excel. A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to thrive in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. We encourage all children to develop a long term active healthy lifestyle that allows them to fulfil their full potential. Through our teaching of PE, we will provide opportunities for pupils to develop values and transferable life skills such as fairness, resilience and respect as well as providing them with opportunities to take part in competitive sport.
IMPLEMENTATION
PE at St Francis provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting and active activities including; Invasion Games, Net & Wall Games, Strike and Field Games, Gymnastics, Dance, Outdoor Learning and Swimming. All children participate in at least two 1 hour lessons each week.
The Long Term PE Curriculum Overview sets out the PE Units which are to be taught each half term throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum and EYFS Development Matters are fully met and the children’s interests and needs are incorporated too. We have developed our scheme which sets out the declarative and procedural knowledge and vocabulary to be learnt for both the Health and Physical elements of PE, ensuring quality progression.
The emphasis of our PE curriculum is inclusion for all children regardless of ability. We provide suitable learning opportunities for all children, including those with SEND. All children are taught across the year by the PE lead and have at least two half terms of Outdoor Learning which includes Forest School skills taught by our trained HLTA. Children in Year 5 are taught swimming weekly.
As part of developing an active lifestyle, children are encouraged to stay active at break times and can access a variety of equipment to use. Some of our Year 5 and 6 pupils have successfully applied and become Active Ambassadors, whereby they offer a range of physical activities for children to participate in at break and lunchtime.
We promote both participation and competition through P.E and sport. We ensure all children experience competition at some level, individually or in a team, within lessons. As well as lots of opportunities to participate in local school sports competitions both within our Trust and beyond. Children participate in workshops/whole school events, sourced by School and delivered by outside providers, covering a variety of sports throughout the year. Thus providing the children with an opportunity to experience new activities, learn new skills, improve their fitness and to try something new. All children in KS1 and KS2 have the opportunity to participate in extracurricular sports activities throughout the year. We offer a Residential OAA experience for children in Years 6 each year and have our annual Sports Week, with the emphasis on participation and achievement for all.

The impact of the PE curriculum is that the children meet their age-appropriate skills in Physical Education and be able to transfer these skills into other sports and everyday activities. Assessment is carried out lesson by lesson to identify what has been acquired and plan future lessons to build on this. Children are encouraged to peer assess and offer constructive feedback to aid further development during each lesson. Judgements are quality assured by the subject leader using first-hand lesson observations, evidence through photographs and video and pupil voice to monitor ongoing progress.
All children regularly engage in physical activity. It is hoped that this will light a love of sport and responsibility for a physically active and healthy life, utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE and its strong links with PSHE. We help motivate children to participate in a variety of sports through a growing range of extra-curricular opportunities and a broad and balanced curriculum.
